Everybody knows that both, men and women have different roles in relationships. Even though the modern society is constantly changing the roles of men and women are staying traditional in most cases. This is followed by certain stereotypes that are strongly put into our heads from our childhood.
Stereotypes result from the dominance of a hierarchical group. Following are some of the traits people would look for when they want to find a partner on an online dating site:
- A man with a secure job and a high salary
- A man who would take responsibility to take care of the family
- A woman with a good cleaning and cooking skills
- A woman with excellent motherly instincts
Such searching criteria on the online dating service have crippled the love lives of many and resulted in a relationship crisis. What are other cliché gender traditions?
1. The man has to make the marriage proposal first
When you find a woman online, you first go on several dates, start a relationship and further, they make the move for a marriage proposal. If the man does not make a move, women would rather just break up. Sometimes such single women are considered as desperate on the dating service.
2. The man must pay at the date
This traditional role for man has been going on for centuries when you meet on the dating site. Some women insist on paying their part because they don’t want to be treated as gold-diggers. Also, if the man doesn’t pay, he is thought to be cheap, poor, and stingy.
3. The woman must clean the house
Apparently, it is the task for a woman while dating. She has to take care of the whole cleaning process of home starting from washing dishes to clothes. When a man does, he is considered as submissive or weak.
4. The woman must cook and take care of guests
While the men enjoy their time with their friends laughing, the women in the relationship are supposed to cook and serve everything to the guests and make sure they don’t need anything else.
Women and men feel (or have felt) pressured to act a certain way or do certain things because “it’s what a man/woman is supposed to do” in the relationship. Feminists may often show the pain a woman undergoes in the relationship while dating. On the other hand, a man who is not able to earn enough money for the family undergoes severe criticism from the society which is often overlooked.
